Luxembourg
July 2017: During our stay in Brussels, we decided to take the train to Luxembourg for a day. It was a 2.5 hour train ride from Brussels, so 5 hours in total. But we left early enough to make it worth the trip. From the train station we walked through the city, as everything was pretty close. Walking across one of the bridges was a great introduction to the lushness of the city. So much greenery everywhere. The highlight of the day was the Casemates du Bock, which is basically an old fortress that you can wander through. The casemates are unlike others we’ve seen, as they’re built inside of a rock face, and are so close to the centre of the city. Beside the casemates is a river, so we walked along the river back to the main part of the city, which was lovely and calming.

Luxembourg has some great walking streets with shops and restaurants, and within this area is the Grand Ducal Palace. It is beautiful from the outside, however, we didn’t get the chance to go in. We hadn’t done a ton of research on it before we arrived, therefore we didn’t get tickets, and didn’t have time to wait in line for a tour. Since it is the current residence of the Grand Duke, it is only open for visitors and tours in July and August I believe.
